June 13

A day trip out of Inverness this morning to Culloden Moor and Cawdor Castle. Culloden Moor was the scene of a battle between the English and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Scots - the battle was a disaster for the outnumbered Scots and the defeat destroyed the clans in the Highlands for more than 100 years. Our Robertsons fought there.

If Cawdor Castle sounds familiar, it’s because it figured in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It’s really more of a country manor than a fancy castle, and has beautiful gardens.

Later in the afternoon we took a cruise on Loch Ness - the highlight for me was the view of Urquhart Castle on the shore.
